ALPHA USERS: FROM ALPHA TO BETA

Alpha users: From alpha to beta
Hello ~okeanos alpha users,

as you already know the ~okeanos alpha phase has ended successfully and we are now getting ready to launch our public beta for the whole Greek research and academic community.

When ~okeanos goes beta, everybody will gain access using their Academic credentials a.k.a the username/password provided by their academic or research institution.

But before we go there, the first thing we need to do is take care of the loyal users that have stayed with us since alpha and prepare a smooth transition to beta for them.

So, if you are an existing ~okeanos alpha user and want to guarantee your transition to ~okeanos beta, you need to do one thing:

Enable the new "Academic" login method under your Profile until August 11, 2013.

Now, if you're thinking that you are not an Academic user, i.e. you don't have Academic credentials from a Greek academic or research institution, don't worry. There will be additional instructions for non-academic users coming up soon on our blog. To give you a quick preview, non-academic users will be invited to submit a formal application to retain their resources which will be then reviewed on a one-to-one basis by GRNET.

So, to enable the "Academic" login method please see here for a detailed walkthrough (with screenshots) on how to do this.

In a nutshell:

1. Sign in using your existing ~okeanos username/password
2. Go to Dashboard -> Profile and click on the "Academic" button
3. Choose your Greek academic or research institution on the corresponding window
4. You will then be redirected to your institution to login
5. Login to your institution page using your institution's credentials (NOT your ~okeanos username/password)

If you login successfully and at the same time your institution has accepted the ~okeanos policy, you will be automatically redirected back to your Profile page with the "Academic" login method appearing under your "Enabled" login methods. If so, you have successfully enabled your Academic login and you are now one of the first users that will have access to ~okeanos beta. Congratulations!

If for some reason your institution has not yet accepted the ~okeanos policy, even though you will be able to login to your institution successfully, you will get redirected back to ~okeanos and get the following message:

'Your request is missing a unique token. This means your academic institution does not yet allow its users to log into ~okeanos with their academic account. Please contact support@okeanos.grnet.gr for more information.'

If that happens, you need to repeat the above procedure once your institution has accepted the ~okeanos policy.

As mentioned, all alpha users will have one (1) month starting today to enable the "Academic" login method under their Profile and guarantee their transition to beta.

Once the "Academic" login method is enabled, you will see two login methods enabled under your Profile: "Classic" and "Academic". This means that you will be able to login to ~okeanos using either your ~okeanos username/password (as you currently do) or hit the new "Academic account" button on the login page and login via your institution with your institutional username/password. Make sure NOT to disable your "Academic" authentication method once enabled, because only the accounts with the "Academic" authentication method enabled will make it to ~okeanos beta.

Hope you join us for the ~okeanos beta.

As always, for any questions or problems please contact us at:

Thank you,
the ~okeanos team
